| Angels Baseball Scene- Name change? LA Angeles or Anaheim Angels |
| 01.30.06 (11:14 am) [edit] |
|
In the case, the City of Anaheim states that the name change is a transparent attempt to eliminate Anaheim from the team name completely. The Anaheim Angels are in the middle of a 33-year lease agreement with the City to play their home games in the City-owned stadium. The City contends that Angels Baseball LP's actions breach the lease agreement, which was intended to identify Anaheim with the team so as to publicize Anaheim as a major league city throughout the nation.
The Anaheim Mayor and City Council are unanimous in their strong disappointment over this recent action. They are united in insisting that the Anaheim Angels comply with the terms of their 33-year contract with the City.
The owner of the Angels insisted Friday in court testimony that renaming his team to include the words "Los Angeles" honors a 10-year-old lease with Anaheim.
Arte Moreno acknowledged that shortly after buying the team in 2003 he ordered staff to stop using the word Anaheim on team merchandise.
He said, however, that despite those orders the team's official name of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim satisfies the terms of a 1996 stadium lease agreement to keep Anaheim in the name.

| Angels Baseball Scene- Tempe stadium renovation |
| 01.30.06 (10:56 am) [edit] |
|
The Angels' spring training complex in Tempe, Ariz., underwent an overhaul over the past year.
The city of Tempe earmarked $20 million to the project. It added four more full-size baseball fields to the complex, a minor-league clubhouse and a redesign on the entrance to Tempe Diablo Stadium.
"For us to stay in the business of spring training, we had to make improvements," said Will Gorman, the city manager of Tempe who oversees Tempe Diablo Stadium and the adjacent complex. "We were the only city in Arizona that hosted a major-league team but not the minor-league camp. For the Angels to have their minor-league camp 17 miles away was not conducive for a major-league organization."
Gorman said $12 million of the project came from the Arizona Stadium and Tourism Authority, which also funded the new Arizona Cardinals NFL stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
The money was raised through an added tax on rental cars and hotel rooms.
The other $8 million came from the city of Tempe itself. The Angels offered to pay for anything that goes over the original $20 million budget.
"It won't look like the stucco fort that it was," he said. "You'll still recognize the place but you'll be surprised at what was done."
