The Angels' spring training complex in Tempe, Ariz., underwent an overhaul over the past year.
The city of Tempe earmarked $20 million to the project. It added four more full-size baseball fields to the complex, a minor-league clubhouse and a redesign on the entrance to Tempe Diablo Stadium.
"For us to stay in the business of spring training, we had to make improvements," said Will Gorman, the city manager of Tempe who oversees Tempe Diablo Stadium and the adjacent complex. "We were the only city in Arizona that hosted a major-league team but not the minor-league camp. For the Angels to have their minor-league camp 17 miles away was not conducive for a major-league organization."
Gorman said $12 million of the project came from the Arizona Stadium and Tourism Authority, which also funded the new Arizona Cardinals NFL stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
The money was raised through an added tax on rental cars and hotel rooms.
The other $8 million came from the city of Tempe itself. The Angels offered to pay for anything that goes over the original $20 million budget.
"It won't look like the stucco fort that it was," he said. "You'll still recognize the place but you'll be surprised at what was done."
